I am currently Reader (somewhere between tenured associate and full professor) in International Politics at King's College London. I previously taught at the Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics. I received my Ph.D. in political science at the University of California, Berkeley in December 2010.

My first book, Development after Statism: Industrial Firms and the Political Economy of South Asia, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2017.  My second book, Patchwork States: the Historical Roots of Subnational Conflict and Competition in South Asia was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022. A third book, Righteous Demagogues: Populist Politics in South Asia and Beyond (coauthored with Pradeep Chhibber) is under production at Oxford University Press.  My broader research interests in comparative politics and political economy include populism, comparative national development, state formation and political order, all in relation to the Indian subcontinent.
